ON CHOICES AND DECISIONS: A Reflection during the Christmas Youth Camp talked

Every day we decide , choices we have are sometimes easy and others are difficult. "Mr. Lunar Fayloga, Professor at Ateneo De Davao University says, as he talked about these Choices and Decisions on the first talk on the Camp's Day 2. He classifies different kind of decision-making that we do every day of our lives.

One is called the "Emotera" where we decide things according how we feel and what our hearts say, or better call it "Heart over Mind" Second is called "Boss" where we decide to choose choices that we want without considering others and anything, or the "Mind over Heart". Third is "Manghuhula" or the "Hula-hope" where we rely our decisions on fortune-telling. While the last is called "Bahala na si Batman" where we are lazy to think or decide for ourselves.

Individuals like us do and have tried these different kinds of decision-making every minute of every hour of every day. A step before doing something that would sometimes change our lives. Decision-making, especially when it is between something important and another in our life should be taken seriously because it would sometimes risk a lot of things even the great life you have.

Youth Bayanihan Captured

St. Joseph the Worker Parish Youth Apostolate (PYA) conducted a Christmas Break Youth Camp (CBYC) at St. Francis Xavier College Seminary, Catalunan Grande, Davao City last December 26-28, 2013. It serves them as a Reunion of all youth in the different GKK's. Since I am one of the Organizer of the event and Officer of the PYA Ministry, I was there to helped my co-officer to run the activities. Every officer has there responsibilities so my responsibility during the camp was to make an official newsletter of the Christmas Break Youth Camp.

In the fateful darkness of the first night of the camp, everyone was caught in a surprise when the calmed weather turned drastically into what everyone was not anticipating for. Heavy rains with gusting winds poured down the campsite in the middle of the time allotted for cooking. Tents were blown away, food and camp materials are getting wet and it seems like that there was nowhere else to go. Within minutes, it is inevitable that the tents rendered helpless and an evacuation was held at once.

Without hesitation, the campers boldlessly helped each other. United as one team, the participants carried their tents, picked up whatever belongings they can save, and fled immediately to the safe zone of the covered court. Officers/Organizers smothered in a mud and wet in the rain rushed in to help their fellow campers and carried the bags and belongings of others. Random people come together and carried tents to the court. People shared their food to mends the needs of those who are hungry. Officers checked if their campers are okay or if something was there to attend to. Everyone felt responsible for each other's welfare and was indeed selfless.

Indeed, Life is full of surprises just like the heavy rain and gusting winds which may have swept the campsite but the true character within us defines who we really are. The Youth Bayanihan is a testimony of such Christian idea. Truly, the true picture of Bayanihan spirit was captured not only in just pictures but more importantly in the hearts and actions of the youth.

Hiring New Lectors and Commentators @ St. Joseph the Worker Parish

By: Rodrigo Sumuob Jr.

The St. Joseph the worker Parish hired almost 50 new lectors and commentators last January 12, 2013 and I was there to renew my service. The new LecCom attended the Sending Forth, because that was one of the requirements to be an official proclaimer's of the Word of God.

Lectors at the St. Joseph serve the parish by proclaiming the Word of God during regular days and Sunday Mass and for special liturgical events, such as our Music Service before the night Mass on Christmas Eve.
Parishioners who want to proclaim the Word at the PARISH should have a strong speaking voice and a prayerful attitude toward the Scriptures. New lectors receive a brief orientation to prepare them to be an active part of the Liturgy of the Word and to acclimate them to the use of the church's sound system. Lectors are scheduled according to the week they assigned to proclaim at the Mass of their choice (from 6:00 to 5:15pm).

As in the other ministries here at the Parish, we welcome new parishioners to become involved and to use their gifts in service to the parish community.

The Lector's and Commentator's Ministry states the helpful reminders about Lectoring:

  1. Practice your Readings prior to coming to Mass.
  2. If you cannot assist at the Mass you are scheduled for contact your Group leader.
  3. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before Mass starts
  4. We are currently in Year A of the Lectionary Cycle
  5. The First Reading is done immediately after the Opening Prayer (remember in Advent and Lent this comes earlier in the Mass since there is no Gloria)
  6. If there is no music minister, the person proclaiming the First Reading should lead the Responsorial Psalm.
  7. The Intercessions occur after the Nicene Creed, as a guide, listen for the words "We believe in the Holy Spirit"
